The letters and numerals shall be completely and securely enclosed in formed or molded transparent plastic of the non-warping and slow burning type. The use of adhesives to bond the plastic to the characters is not acceptable. The plastic shall not split, crack, or separate from the letters or numerals when the character is bent approximately 15° or dropped.
All characters shall be vertical within 1/64 inch from absolute vertical. From an established line, approximately 3/16 inch from the bottom of the plastic, all numerals shall be within 1/32 inch from absolute horizontal.
The overall size of the plastic/lead letter or numeral combination shall be 0.625 inch ± 0.010 inch high, 5/16 inch ± 1/32 inch wide and 0.060 inch ± 0.010 thick. The letters and numerals shall be mounted within 1/32 of the centerline of the plastic.
The characters shall be clean and free of grease, oil, dirt, and other foreign matter.
Two channel aluminum mounting holder
The channels of the holder shall be designed hold the plastic-backed characters and to permit them to slide into place easily.
The holder shall be a nominal 4-1/2 inches long and shall not be more than 1-7/16 inches wide.
The holder shall be fabricated of sheet aluminum, or as an aluminum extrusion, a minimum of 0.018 inch thick. There shall be two channels, each arranged to hold the characters. The double channel holder shall be one piece construction or shall consist of two single channel holders spot welded together.
Any spots welds shall be sound and free from pits, deformities, or corrosive areas.
The holder shall be free of sharp corners, sharp edges, cracks, or deformities.
